Psychological treatment for methamphetamine use and associated psychiatric symptom outcomes: A systematic review
Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment Oct 11, 2019
Stuart AM, Baker AL, Denham AMJ, et al. - Given the efficacy of psychological treatments for reducing methamphetamine use, researchers sought to determine the effects of these treatments on co-occurring psychiatric symptoms. Following the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis statement, they conducted a narrative synthesis of studies to inform methodology. Searching eight electronic peer-reviewed databases, they assessed 10 eligible studies for this work. The evidence here supports the efficacy of a variety of psychological treatments in reducing levels of methamphetamine use and improving psychiatric symptoms. Although efficacy of brief interventions was evident, more intensive interventions are suggested to have bigger impact on methamphetamine use and/or psychiatric symptomatology.
