Propofol use in children with allergies to egg, peanut, soybean or other legumes

Anaesthesia May 17, 2019

Sommerfield DL, et al. - In this retrospective study, researchers focused on the safety of propofol use in children with an allergy to egg, peanut, soybean or other legumes. They examined a pediatric population which underwent general anaesthesia at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children between 2005 and 2015, and had immunologically confirmed egg, peanut, soybean or legume allergy. Using a prospective anaesthesia research database, patients without any known food allergies were selected as controls. Findings revealed a rare incidence of genuine serious allergic reaction to propofol in the studied pediatric population. They found that a history of food allergy was not a reliable predictor for such allergic reactions.
