Prolonged cone b-wave on electroretinography is associated with severity of inflammation in noninfectious uveitis
American Journal of Ophthalmology Dec 06, 2019
Brouwer AH, et al. - In this prospective cohort analysis, researchers used full-field electroretinography (ERG) to define retinal function in patients with noninfectious uveitis and they also correlated the ERG to disease duration and severity of inflammation. This study involved 200 patients suffering from noninfectious uveitis. Those with a disease duration of < 1 year were included in group A [n = 80] and those with disease duration of > 5 years were included in group B [n = 120]. They found that in cases of noninfectious uveitis of all anatomic subtypes, including anterior uveitis without apparent inflammation of the posterior segment, there was a frequent influence on ERG results. Seemingly, there was a link between ERG abnormalities and the severity of inflammation from both the present and the past, and thus, ERG abnormalities may be noted even after the vanishing of signs of retinal inflammation.
