Prolonged clinical remission and low disease activity statuses are associated with better quality of life in systemic lupus erythematosus
Lupus Sep 01, 2019
Poomsalood N, et al. - SLE (n = 237) patients in an out-patient clinic during the former 12 months were involved in a study by the researchers in order to ascertain the relationship between disease activity status and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in SLE patients. A total of 100 of 237 SLE patients attained prolonged clinical remission (CR), 46 patients achieved prolonged low disease activity (LDA) and 91 patients were not in CR/LDA. In all domains, non-CR/LDA patients had a significantly greater total Systemic Lupus Erythematosus-specific Quality-of-Life questionnaire (SLEQoL) score and in comparison with CR/LDA patients. Between CR and LDA groups, no important variation in SLEQoL domain scores was observed. Multivariable analysis exhibited that non-CR/LDA was positively related to SLEQoL score in comparison with CR/LDA. Furthermore, non-CR/LDA was at a higher risk of impaired QoL (SLEQoL score > 80) in comparison with CR. Nonetheless, no important variation between CR and LDA in terms of SLEQoL score or impaired QoL was noted. Other factors related to greater SLEQoL score were damage index and anemia. Therefore, in SLE patients, prolonged CR and LDA are correlated with better HRQoL and have a similar impact. Prolonged CR or optional LDA may be utilized as the treatment goal of a treat to target strategy in SLE.
