Prognostic significance of tumour infiltration growth pattern in patients with advanced gastric cancer
Journal of Clinical Pathology Jan 26, 2019
Zhao B, et al. - In this retrospective analysis of 1,455 patients with advanced gastric cancer (GC) who had curative gastrectomy, researchers assessed the prognostic significance of infiltration growth pattern (INF) pattern. Histopathologically, INFa/b and INFc patterns were detected, which were compared with respect to prognosis and clinicopathological features. They found a poorer prognosis in patients with INFc pattern vs that of those with INFa/b pattern, even when they were stratified according to lymph node metastasis and the tumour, node, metastases stage. Poorer prognosis of T2–T3 stage patients was reported in a significant association with INFc pattern, however, a similar result was not observed among T4a stage patients. Between T3 stage patients with INFc pattern and T4a stage patients, no significant prognostic difference was observed. INF pattern was identified as an independent prognostic factor and recommending its histopathological assessment in surgically resected specimens in patients with advanced GC was supported.
