Prognostic significance of serum neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) levels in pre-eclampsia and eclampsia
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Jan 04, 2019
Abbas AM, et al. - In this prospective cohort study conducted in tertiary University hospital between January and December 2016, researchers evaluate the levels of circulating sFlt-1 in pre-eclampsia (PE) and eclampsia patients and assessed its prognostic significance in detection of PE complications. Two groups of patients [(Group I) severe PE group and (Group II) eclampsia group] and age, parity and gestational age matched women [control group (Group III)] were investigated for serum NGAL levels at inclusion with all basic investigations. NGAL levels were higher among women with complicated severe PE than those noted in non complicated cases. Similarly, complicated eclampsia cases had a higher mean serum level of NGAL than non-complicated cases. Findings thus suggest the utility of serum NGAL as a prognostic marker to predict the occurrence of complications in cases of PE and eclampsia.
