Prognostic role of serum albumin, total lymphocyte count, and Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) on outcomes after geriatric hip fracture surgery: A meta-analysis and systematic review

Journal of Arthroplasty Feb 15, 2019

Li S, et al. - Investigators estimated 34,363 adults of age 74-85 years to assess the significance of serum albumin, total lymphocyte count, and Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) on outcomes after geriatric hip fracture surgery. They observed a significant association of hypoalbuminemia with higher total mortality and a higher risk of in-hospital death. Low total lymphocyte count and Mini Nutritional Assessment results "at risk of malnutrition" and "malnourished" nutritional status, were also significantly correlated with higher total mortality. They concluded low serum albumin level, a single indicator for inclined risk of in-hospital death, postoperative complications and total mortality after hip fracture surgery in older candidates.
