Primary cardiac hospitalizations in pulmonary arterial hypertension: Trends and outcomes from 2001 to 2014
Respiratory Medicine Feb 06, 2020
Harder EM, et al. - Researchers assessed the characteristics as well as mortality of primary cardiac hospitalizations in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) from 2001 to 2014, utilizing the National (Nationwide) Inpatient Sample. Overall 207,095 hospitalizations in PAH were documented during this time period, of which, 100,509 (48.5%) had a primary cardiac diagnosis. In PAH, congestive heart failure caused most primary cardiac hospitalizations, and the most common primary non-cardiac diagnosis was pneumonia. A reduction in primary cardiac hospitalizations in PAH, from 52.9% to 41.4%, was evident during the study period. In primary cardiac hospitalizations in PAH, the mortality was estimated to be 5.3%. Overall, findings revealed that patients with PAH commonly had primary cardiac hospitalizations, and decreased mortality was seen in relation to primary cardiac hospitalizations vs admissions for primary non-cardiac diagnoses.
