Prevalence of tubulopathy and association with renal function loss in HIV- infected patients
Nephrology Dialysis Transplantation Apr 12, 2020
Lescure FX, Fellahi S, Pialoux, et al. - Researchers examined HIV-infected individuals for the prevalence and determinants of proximal tubular dysfunction (PTD). In addition, they assessed how the tubulopathy affects the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) outcome. They assessed a cohort of 694 outpatients in a French center; of these patients, 14% presented with PTD and 5% with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Observations suggest that HIV-infected individuals frequently exhibit PTD but sub-Saharan African patients exhibit it less frequently. PTD is linked with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate exposure only in non-Africans. Multiple biochemical testing is required for its diagnosis and it is not linked with an accelerated eGFR decline.
