Archives of Women's Mental Health Jun 15, 2021
Millan-Alanis JM, Carranza-Navarro F, Humberto de León-Gutiérrez, et al. - Researchers performed a systematic review and meta-analysis with the aim to investigate the prevalence of suicidality, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anxiety among female sex workers (FSW). From MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, EMBASE, Ovid and Cochrane Central Database yielded 8,035 studies in the search strategy; 55 of these were included for analysis. Suicidal ideation and attempt were prevalent among 27% and 20%, respectively. In addition, overall prevalence of 44% and 29% was recorded for depression and PTSD, respectively. Per classification, 11 studies were of high quality. Overall findings suggest a high prevalence of suicidality, depression, and PTSD among FSW. They highlight the relevance of developing accessible large-scale interventions that assess mental health among this population.
