Prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea in patients with rheumatoid arthritis
Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine Feb 26, 2020
Wali S, Mustafa M, Manzar D, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) using polysomnography (PSG) in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and its correlation with RA activity. They recruited 199 patients with RA (mean age: 48.93 ± 12.7 years; mean BMI 31.70 ± 9.74 kg/m2; 94% females) who presented at the rheumatology clinic at a university hospital from 2017 to 2018; of these, 110 patients (55%) underwent PSG, and 5 were excluded. In the whole population, the estimated prevalence of OSA [apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) ≥ 5 events/h] was 58.1%, whereas moderate-to-severe OSA (AHI ≥ 15) was prevalent in 22.9%. Observations revealed more common occurrence of OSA in patients with RA than in the general population, but it seems to have no correlation with disease activity.
