Prevalence of obesity and obesity-associated muscle wasting in patients on peritoneal dialysis
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Nov 04, 2019
Guida B, Trio R, Di Maro M, et al. - In this observational, cross sectional study, researchers determined the prevalence of obesity as well as obesity-related muscle wasting in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients (n = 88, 53.4 ± 13.1 years; 67% male). Through BIA and BIVA, they evaluated body composition. By means of FMI and SM/BW cutoff values, they detected patients with obesity and/or with reduced muscle mass, respectively. A reduced muscle mass was detected in 44.3% of the patients (37.5% moderate and 6.8% severe). Patients with normal, moderately, and severely reduced muscle mass had 6.1%, 81.8%, and 100% prevalence of obesity, respectively. Participants having diabetes exhibited a higher prevalence of severe muscle mass loss vs those without diabetes. Higher fibrinogen and CPR blood levels were observed in patients with obesity-related muscle wasting vs those with normal body composition. In this population of PD patients, a strong link of obesity and diabetes with muscle mass loss was evident.
