Prevalence of malnutrition in COPD and its relationship with the parameters related to disease severity
International Journal of COPD Oct 20, 2018
Mete B, et al. – In this cross-sectional study of 105 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), researchers determined the nutritional status and anthropometric values in a group of patients with COPD, and examined the relationship between these factors and disease severity. They performed spirometric examination of all study participants, applied mini nutritional assessment form, and measured the anthropometric values by bioelectrical impedance method. There was a significant prevalence of malnutrition in patients with COPD. Patients with malnourishment and with low body mass index measures had significantly lower spirometric values. Study findings supported malnutrition as an important and frequently encountered issue in patients with COPD. The investigators suggested the evaluation of nutritional status in every patient with COPD along with tailoring nutritional intake on an individual basis.
