Prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection and feasibility of TB preventive therapy among Thai prisoners: A cross-sectional study

BMC Public Health Jun 28, 2021

Gatechompol S, Harnpariphan W, Supanan R, et al. - A cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection and feasibility of TB preventive therapy among Thai prisoners. Researchers performed a cross-sectional study among prisoners in Klong Prem Central Prison, Bangkok. Individuals were screened for active TB by questionnaire and chest x-ray. They assessed latent TB infection (LTBI) by Tuberculin skin test and QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus among subgroups. The study enrolled a total of 1,002 participants between August 2018 and November 2019. This is the first research to assess the prevalence of LTBI and feasibility of isoniazid preventive therapy among Thai prisoners. In Thailand, LTBI prevalence in male prisoners is high. It has been concluded that LTBI screening and treatment should be implemented together with other preventive components.
