Prevalence of functional defecation disorders in children: A systematic review and meta-analysis
The Journal of Pediatrics | Apr 29, 2018
Koppen IJN, et al. - This study assessed the epidemiology of functional constipation and functional nonretentive fecal incontinence (FNRFI) in children. Researchers also sought to investigate the geographical, age, and sex distribution of functional constipation and FNRFI and to determine the associated factors. It was observed that the reported prevalence of functional constipation ranged from 0.5% to 32.2%, with a pooled prevalence of 9.5%. Data exhibited that functional constipation was common in childhood. It appeared to be linked with geographical location, lifestyle factors, and stressful life events. FNRFI was discovered to be rare, not displaying any associated factors.
