Prevalence of diabetes mellitus in people clinically diagnosed with periodontitis: A systematic review and meta-analysis of epidemiologic studies

Ziukaite L, et al. - Authors assessed in subjects with professionally diagnosed periodontitis the prevalence and odds of having diabetes. Compared to people without periodontitis, the overall prevalence and odds of having diabetes were higher within periodontitis populations. The prevalence was underestimated by self-reported diabetes when compared to this condition assessed clinically. They observed the geographical differences: In studies conducted in Asia, the highest diabetes prevalence among subjects with periodontitis was observed and the lowest in studies originating from Europe.
