Prevalence of depression and its associated factors among patients with diabetes mellitus at Tirunesh-Beijing general hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Engidaw NA, et al. - Researchers undertook this institution-based cross-sectional analysis to determine the prevalence as well as related factors of depression in patients suffering from diabetes mellitus at Tirunesh-Beijing General Hospital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. They recruited 403 participants, employing a systematic random sampling technique. The evaluation of depression was done using patient health questionnaire-9. A response rate of 99% was obtained by inquiring 403 study participants. In diabetic patients, a 21.3% prevalence of depression was reported. The factors that were shown to be related to depression were type II diabetes mellitus, poor social support and physical disability. Implementing trained health professionals led early depression-focused regular screening for diabetic patient was recommended. Taking into account linkage with mental health service providers is also a requirement. It is required that clinicians pay attention to diabetic patients with physically disable and poor social support.
