Prevalence of cardiac comorbidities, and their underdetection and contribution to exertional symptoms in COPD: Results from the COSYCONET cohort
International Journal of COPD Sep 29, 2019
Alter P, Mayerhofer BA, Kahnert K, et al. - Researchers investigated patients from the COPD cohort COSYCONET, to determine the contribution of cardiac comorbidities to COPD symptoms, as well as their link with the patients’ diagnostic status, medication, and echocardiographic findings. The inclusion criteria were satisfied by 1,591 patients (GOLD 0–4: n = 230/126/614/498/123). Among patients with suspicious echocardiographic findings, being undiagnosed and untreated was reported for a remarkable proportion, this suggests an increased risk for an unfavorable prognosis. They also noted the reliance of cardiac size and function on lung function, as well as, only partial association of these with cardiovascular history. Although LV size vs lung function was shown to have a small contribution to COPD symptoms but it was detectable regardless of all other influencing factors. However, the suitability for this purpose was displayed by only the modified British Medical Research Council dyspnea scale and Saint Georges Respiratory Questionnaire activity component.
