Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Feb 05, 2021
Sandstrom A, Perroud N, Alda M, et al. - In mood disorders, attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is linked with unfavorable outcomes, including more frequent mood episodes and elevated risk of suicide, so researchers reported on the prevalence of ADHD in individuals with mood disorders. Searching PsycInfo and PubMed using search terms for ADHD and mood disorders, they identified 92 studies including 17,089 individuals. According to the results, in BD, they observed an ADHD prevalence of 73% in childhood, 43% in adolescence, and 17% in adulthood. Appraisal of data from 52 studies with 16,897 individuals suggested that, in MDD, ADHD prevalence was 28% in childhood, 17% in adolescence, and 7% in adulthood. ADHD was noted to be three times more common in people with mood disorders vs those without, and 1.7 times more common in BD vs MDD. In individuals with BD and MDD, ADHD should be assessed and treated.
