Journal of Asthma Jan 25, 2019
Karachaliou F, et al. - In this cross-sectional study conducted from 10/2012 to 12/2013 on a pre-selected, representative sample of Greek schoolchildren, researchers assessed the prevalence of asthma symptoms as well as its relation to overweight/obesity as well as other socioeconomic, demographic, and lifestyle factors. Using the approved Greek version of the International Study on Allergies and Asthma in Childhood (ISAAC) criteria, asthma was defined. They asked parents to complete standardized questionnaires assessing among others socioeconomic and sedentary activity habits. In 31% of population, the prevalence of any asthma symptoms was reported in this first representative survey of prevalence of asthma symptoms in children and adolescents in Greece indicating its continuous increase. Regardless of socioeconomic and regional factors, there was a robust link between presence of asthma symptoms and obesity and sedentary activities. A decrease in the odds of presenting any asthma symptoms was observed in relation to the increase in age, and an increase was noted with overweight, obesity and sedentary lifestyle. Findings highlighted the importance of public health policies toward obesity prevention and enhancement of physical activities in pediatric populations.
