Prevalence and prognostic significance of negative U-waves in a 12-lead electrocardiogram in the general population
American Journal of Cardiology Oct 24, 2018
Holkeri A, et al. - Given that negative U-waves in an electrocardiogram (ECG) are often associated with cardiac disease, researchers assessed the prognostic significance of negative U-waves in the general population. They focused on all-cause mortality, cardiac mortality, and sudden cardiac death (SCD), as well as on hospitalization due to cardiac causes, during 24.5 ± 10.3 years follow-up in 6,518 adults (45% male; mean age, 50.9 ± 13.8 years), in whom 12-lead ECGs were assessed for the presence of U-waves. According to findings, adverse events were observed in relation to the presence of negative U-waves in ECG in the general population. Men demonstrated this association independently of cardiovascular risk factors.
