Prevalence and prognosis of respiratory muscle weakness in heart failure patients with preserved ejection fraction

Respiratory Medicine Nov 28, 2019

Hamazaki N, Kamiya K, Matsuzawa R, et al. - Researchers undertook this single-centre observational study to determine if mortality in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) can be predicted by respiratory muscle weakness (RMW). This study included consecutive 1,023 heart failure patients [445 in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and 578 in HFpEF]. At hospital discharge, respiratory muscle strength was evaluated by measuring maximal inspiratory pressure. All-cause mortality following hospital discharge was assessed as the endpoint. They found that 39% of HFpEF patients developed RMW, which was independently related to poor prognosis. Only in HFpEF but not in HFrEF, RWM had an additive influence on prognosis.
