Prevalence and factors associated with dental caries in patients attending an HIV care clinic in Uganda: A cross sectional study
BMC Oral Health Jul 25, 2019
Kalanzi D, et al. - In this cross-sectional study involving 748 candidates (mean age was 39 ± 9.4 years), researchers determined the prevalence and factors correlated with dental caries [a major public health disease in all regions of the world] in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected adults attending the Mulago Immune Suppression Syndrome (ISS) clinic in Uganda. Through linear regression analyses, the prevalence and factors linked to dental caries were investigated. Investigators found that the dental caries prevalence was high (83.7%) among HIV infected adults under the care and longer duration of ART was linked to increased risk of caries. The integration of dental care in HIV treatment programs is therefore recommended.
