Prevalence and factors associated with bone erosion in patients with gout
Arthritis Care & Research Dec 12, 2019
Wu M, Liu FJ, Chen J, et al. - Experts ascertained the prevalence, distribution, and factors related to bone erosion detectable by ultrasound in individuals with gout. Ultrasound scans were carried out in 980 people with gout, and bone erosion was detected in 431 persons. A high percentage of individuals with gout had bone erosions along with the first metatarsophalangeal joint as the most often involved site. In gout individuals, factors related to bone erosion were age, duration of gout, tophi, and synovial hypertrophy. Moreover, in people with gout, the number of tophi, but not their size, was robustly related to bone erosion.
