Prevalence and distribution of e-cigarette use among U.S. adults: Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2016
Annals of Internal Medicine Aug 31, 2018
Blaha MJ, et al. - In this cross-sectional study, researchers described the prevalence and distribution of current e-cigarette use among U.S. adults in 2016. Participants in the study were adults aged 18 years and older. Findings revealed that e-cigarette use is common, particularly in younger adults, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons, current cigarette smokers, and persons with comorbid conditions. It was noted that the prevalence of use varies across states. Among persons aged 18 to 24 years, the prevalence of current e-cigarette use was highest, translating to approximately 2.8 million users in this age range. These contemporary estimates might inform researchers, health care policymakers, and tobacco regulators about demographic and geographic distributions of e-cigarette use.
