Prevalence and cardiometabolic risks of normal weight obesity in Chinese population: A nationwide study
Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Jun 30, 2018
Jia A, et al. - Researchers used data from the 2007-2008 China National Diabetes and Metabolic Disorders Study to determine the prevalence of normal weight obesity (NWO) and how it correlates to cardiometabolic risks in Chinese patients. The biological impedance method was applied to measure BF. A normal BMI (18.5-23.9 kg/m2) but with excess BF (BF ≥ 24% for men and ≥ 33% for women) defined NWO. Findings revealed a relatively high occurrence of NWO in the Chinese population, with Chinese men vs Chinese women exhibiting a higher prevalence. Presence of NWO was associated with significantly increased cardiometabolic risks, and such risks remain after excluding the impact of abdominal obesity.
