Prevalence and associated factors of undiagnosed atrial fibrillation among end-stage renal disease patients on maintenance haemodialysis: A cross-sectional study
BMC Cardiovascular Disorders Apr 26, 2020
AlAwwa I, Al-Hindi R, Alfraihat N, et al. - In this cross-sectional study involving Jordanian haemodialysis patients, researchers focused on the prevalence of, as well as the factors correlated with atrial fibrillation (AF) in this sample. This inquiry was undertaken in four tertiary hospitals from October 2018 to February 2019. Participants included all consenting patients aged 18 years or older who were receiving haemodialysis for at least three months before the study. For AF, a prevalence of 7.8% was reported, with no gender difference. This implies that in this patient population, AF prevalence was high, but largely undiagnosed. AF was identified to be generally related to advancing age, history of ischaemic heart disease, lower interdialytic weight gain, and history of smoking. A routine check-up of AF was recommended in this high-risk group of patients as serious complications may be prevented by anticoagulant therapy if indicated. However, findings highlight the requirement for the development of regional chronic kidney disease and dialysis registries in the Middle East region.
