Prevalence and associated factors of pseudoexfoliation in a Russian population. The Ural Eye and Medical Study
American Journal of Ophthalmology Oct 16, 2019
Bikbov MM, Zainullin RM, Gilmanshin TR, et al. - In this typical, ethnically mixed, population from Russia with an age of 40+ years, researchers conducted this population-based cross-sectional study to evaluate the prevalence of pseudoexfoliation (PEX) and its associations. The Ural Eye and Medical Study comprised 5,899 out of 7,328 eligible people (mean age:59.0 ± 10.7 years). The study included 5451 candidates after excluding pseudophakic and aphakic people. Findings suggested an association of PEX prevalence with older age, Russian ethnicity, higher intraocular pressure and open-angle glaucoma. No significant association was found between PEX prevalence and gender, region of habitation, BMI, level of education, smoking, alcohol consumption, history of cardiovascular or cerebrovascular disease and dementia, prevalence of diabetes mellitus, arterial hypertension, COPD, chronic kidney disease, as well as hearing loss.
