Prescription opioid use and misuse among adolescents and young adults in the United States: A national survey study
PLoS Medicine Dec 12, 2019
Hudgins JD, et al. - By performing this retrospective examination of the National Survey on Drug Use and Health for the years 2015 and 2016, researchers assessed the previous-year prevalence of prescription opioid use and misuse, sources of prescription opioids, and additional substance use in adolescents and young adults. Using any prescription opioid was reported by significantly more females vs males. The probability of having had any opioid use was more among non-Hispanic whites and blacks vs Hispanics. In the US, findings revealed a high prevalence of prescription opioid use among adolescents and young adults despite recognized risks for future opioid and other drug use disorders. Among adolescents and young adults, reported prescription opioid misuse was common. Often, a link between reported prescription opioid misuse and additional substance abuse was also identified, emphasizing the value of drug and alcohol screening programs in this population. Findings also revealed that friends and relatives provided prescription opioids to greater than half of youths misusing these medications, and this revelation should be considered in prevention and treatment efforts.
