Prescription opioid misuse among adolescents and emerging adults in the United States: A scoping review

Preventive Medicine Jan 10, 2020

Bonar EE, Coughlin L, Roche JS, et al. - Since the US opioid epidemic is an important public health problem, researchers performed this study applying PRISMA Scoping Review (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines in order to explain the current state of research centering on prescription opioid misuse (POM) in adolescents and emerging adults in the US. They explored nine databases to find relevant empirical articles published in the preceding 5 years (January 2013–September 2018). Of those, 76 satisfied the inclusion criteria. They found that epidemiology of POM and risk/protective factors, such as demographics (eg, gender, race), individual (eg, substance use, mental health), and social (eg, peer substance use) were the focus of the majority of the studies. Although annual national surveys are performed, still, there exists a lack of longitudinal investigations analyzing markers of initiation and escalation of prescription opioid misuse (eg, repeated overdoses, time to misuse). Importantly, few evidence-based prevention or early intervention programs were recognized.
