Prescription drug misuse: Sources of controlled medications in adolescents
Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Jun 25, 2019
Schepis TS, et al. - Using data from the 2009 to 2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, researchers analyzed adolescent prescription drug misuse (PDM) sources and the prevalence of other substance use, substance use disorder (SUD), and mental health outcomes were linked with sources. Participants in the study were 103,920 adolescents (12-17 years of age). A past-year SUD was found in more than 70% of teenagers who used multiple sources. Findings revealed that adolescents who use multiple sources, purchases, and theft/fake prescriptions have high rates of use of other substances, SUD and MDD. Intervention is especially needed in these cases. Sources of PDM and misuse should be screened in adolescents with other SUD and MDD.
