Preoperative opioid use and its association with early revision of total knee arthroplasty

Journal of Arthroplasty Jun 15, 2018

Bedard NA, et al. - Authors ascertained if the preoperative opioid use was related to an increased risk for early revision total knee arthroplasty (TKA). They queried the Humana administrative claims database to identify patients who underwent unilateral TKA during the years 2007-2015. The pre-operative opioid use was identified as being independently correlated to a greater risk for an early revision TKA. Findings also suggested an association of younger age, obesity, and smoking with elevated risk. The efforts to reduce inappropriate opioid prescribing was supported in the findings.
