Preoperative deep venous thrombosis (DVT) after femoral neck fracture in the elderly, the incidence, timing, location and related risk factors
BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders Mar 19, 2021
Niu S, Li J, Zhao V, et al. - This study was carried out to assess the epidemiologic characteristics of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) in elderly patients with a femoral neck fracture. Between January 2016 and October 2019, researchers conducted a retrospective analysis on elderly patients with femoral neck fractures admitted to two institutions. They applied duplex ultrasonography to diagnose DVT. They retrieved Patients’ hospitalization medical records to obtain the data, which were related to demographics, comorbidities, injury, and laboratory results on admission. The study enrolled a total of 980 patients. The results of this study demonstrate that the preoperative DVT is not very prevalent following elderly femoral neck fractures, but with a certain proportion in the uninjured extremity, necessitating more attention. These distinguished risk factors aid inpatient counseling, individualized risk evaluation, and risk stratification, and should be kept in mind.
