Preoperative C-reactive protein/albumin ratio, a risk factor for postoperative delirium in elderly patients after total joint arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty Jun 30, 2019
Peng J, et al. - A total of 272 elderly patients who were aged 65-85 years who were scheduled to undergo elective total joint arthroplasty (TJA) with epidural anesthesia were selected in a study by the researchers in order to assess potential risk factors including C-reactive protein/albumin ratio (CAR) for postoperative delirium (POD, as an acute brain failure, a widely reported and a very common postoperative complication closely related to increased morbidity and mortality) in elderly subjects after TJA. Fifty-five patients suffered POD with an incidence of 20.2%, within 7 days after the operation. In elderly subjects who underwent TJA, age and preoperative CAR level were recognized as two independent risk factors for POD. Hence, for POD in elderly subjects following TJA, preoperative CAR level could be a hopeful predictor.
