Preoperative bisphosphonate treatment may adversely affect the outcome after shoulder arthroplasty
The Bone & Joint Journal Feb 16, 2019
Mai DH, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, investigators examined the impact of preoperative bisphosphonate treatment on outcomes of shoulder arthroplasty among 87 candidates. They noticed an association of prior treatment with bisphosphonates with intraoperative complications like fracture and one-year postoperative complications. They did not find any statistical significance for complications 2 years postoperatively. They concluded a greater risk of intraoperative and one-year postoperative complications among subjects treated with bisphosphonates during the 3-year period before shoulder arthroplasty as compared to those without such prior therapy.
