Prenatal cadmium exposure is associated with shorter leukocyte telomere length in Chinese newborns

BMC Medicine Feb 12, 2019

Zhang L, et al. - In this prospective birth cohort study conducted in Wuhan, China, between November 2013 and March 2015, researchers examined whether prenatal exposure to cadmium and relative cord blood telomere length (TL) in Chinese newborns were associated. For this investigation, 410 mother-newborn pairs were involved. Investigators found that the geometric mean of maternal urinary cadmium concentration was 0.68 μg/g creatinine. Findings suggested an association of increased maternal urinary cadmium with shortened relative cord blood TL. The outcomes show more evidence of the negative effects of cadmium exposure to the environment and suggest that early life can begin with accelerated aging or cadmium-related diseases.
