Preliminary data on help‐seeking intentions and behaviors of individuals completing a widely available online screen for eating disorders in the United States
International Journal of Eating Disorders Sep 04, 2020
Fitzsimmons‐Craft EE, Balantekin KN, Graham AK, et al. - Given a possible key role of scaling an online screen that provides referrals in closing the treatment gap for eating disorders (EDs), researchers attempted to attain insight into the respondents' help‐seeking intentions and behaviors after receiving screen results among respondents to the National Eating Disorders Association online screen. Among respondents who completed the screen over 18 months (February 9, 2018–August 28, 2019), 343,072 screening positive or at high risk for an ED and were provided the option to accord data on help‐seeking intentions (after screen completion) and behaviors (2‐month follow‐up). Only a small minority of the respondents [4.8% (n = 16,396)] provided data; of these, only one‐third expressed help‐seeking intentions and 16% began treatment. Based on observations, they emphasize considering ways to raise respondents' motivation for and follow‐through with care in online screening.
