Pregnancy as a risk factor for severe influenza infection: An individual participant data meta-analysis
BMC Infectious Diseases Aug 07, 2019
Mertz D, et al. - In pregnant women, researchers investigated the risk for severe outcomes following influenza infection while adjusting for other prognostic factors via an individual participant data meta-analysis. They identified 33 datasets that included data on 186,656 individuals. Of these, inclusion of 36,498 eligible women of reproductive age and known pregnancy status was done. Analysis suggests that pregnant women are at a higher risk of influenza-associated hospitalization vs non-pregnant women. Neither the mortality nor the likelihood of ICU admission was higher in pregnant women who sought medical care. However, further work is required to address the risk of influenza-associated complications in a true community-based cohort of pregnant women.
