Predictors of survival and progression in behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia
European Journal of Neurology Feb 02, 2019
Agarwal S, et al. - In behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), investigators identified factors that can forecast survival and clinical progression, using multivariate modelling. For this investigation, 75 consecutive subjects with clinically probable bvFTD were prospectively followed up over an 8-year period. Researchers reported that survival without dependence was foreseen by shorter disease duration at presentation, greater atrophy in the anterior cingulate cortex, older age, and a higher burden of behavioral symptoms. Occurrence of a known pathogenic frontotemporal dementia mutation was the most robust predictor of progression in terms of disease progression, and faster progression correlated with deficits in letter fluency and greater atrophy in the motor cortex. They concluded that this research provided novel clinical predictors of survival and progression in bvFTD, which were likely to affect prognosis and care planning of this difficult disease.
