Predictors of 30-day readmission in Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis: A cross-sectional database study
Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology Dec 11, 2019
Guzman AK, et al. - In this cross-sectional study of the 2010-2014 Nationwide Readmissions Database, researchers determined the variables predictive of 30-day readmission following Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis (SJS/TEN) hospitalization. They used bivariate and multivariable logistic regression to assess correlations of patient demographics, comorbidities, and hospital characteristics with readmission. Findings revealed that there were 8,837 index admissions with SJS/TEN reported, of which 910 were readmitted, with diagnoses including systemic infection, SJS/TEN, and skin infection. Associated features involved age 45 to 64 years, Medicaid insurance, and nonmetropolitan hospital admission. Associated comorbidities involved HIV/AIDS, collagen vascular disease, and metastatic cancer. Data reported that the median per-readmission cost was $10,019. After SJS/TEN hospitalizations, 30-day readmissions are common. Dedicated efforts to recognise patients at risk can improve peridischarge continuity.
