Predictors and moderators of recurring self-harm in adolescents participating in a comparative treatment trial of psychological interventions

Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry Aug 02, 2019

Adrian M, McCauley E, Berk MS, et al. - Researchers examined suicidal adolescents who took part in a randomized controlled trial assessing dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) and individual/group supportive therapy (IGST), for predictors and moderators of treatment outcomes. They included adolescents (N = 173) in the intent-to-treat sample and randomly allocated them to receive 6 months of DBT or IGST. Findings revealed the most change in self-harm behaviors over the course of treatment among adolescents that have high levels of family conflict, externalizing problems, and an increased level of severity markers; further, these adolescents benefitted from both treatment interventions. DBT may provide more benefit to those with higher levels of emotion dysregulation and parent psychopathology.
