Predictive factors for complications after surgical treatment for schwannomas of the extremities
BMC Musculoskeletal Disorders Apr 17, 2019
Hirai T, et al. - To illustrate predictive factors for complications after surgical treatment of schwannomas developed in the major nerves of the extremities, researchers analyzed 141 schwannomas arisen in major nerves. They found the incidence of postoperative complications in 49 lesions including 42 with sensory disturbance and 8 with motor weakness. An association of older age, tumors originating from the upper extremity, and major motor nerve involvement was reported with a higher complication rate. They found major motor nerve involvement as an independent predictive factor for postoperative complications in multivariate analysis. They overall concluded a higher risk for postoperative complications in schwannomas originating from major motor nerves.
