Predicting the 10-year risk of cataract surgery using machine learning techniques on questionnaire data: Findings from the 45 and Up Study
British Journal of Ophthalmology May 29, 2021
Wang W, Han X, Zhang J, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to examine the feasibility and accuracy of using machine learning (ML) techniques on self-reported questionnaire data to predict the 10-year risk of cataract surgery, as well as to identify meaningful predictors of cataract surgery in middle-aged and older Australians. A total of 207,573 participants, aged 45 years and above without a history of cataract surgery at baseline, were selected from the 45 and Up Study. The study found that ML modelling was marginally better than the conventional logistic model at predicting the 10-year risk of cataract surgery based solely on questionnaire data.
