Predicting outcomes and complications following radioiodine therapy in Graves’ thyrotoxicosis
Clinical Endocrinology Oct 11, 2018
Aung ET, et al. - This retrospective cohort study investigated predictors of radioiodine (RAI) failure, weight gain, thyroid eye disease (TED) and patient satisfaction by analyzing data of 655 episodes of RAI in Graves’ thyrotoxicosis patients (2006 – 2015). Researchers found that treatment failure after RAI occurs in predictable groups and this ought to be reflected in the data gave to patients. They observed that weight gain is common and may not entirely be explained by a return to pre-thyrotoxic baseline. Findings revealed that new TED developed in 7.6% but was not related to post-RAI dysthyroidism. They found that treatment satisfaction was generally high. In this large cohort, they were unable to find out any significant impact of post-RAI dysthryoidism on weight gain, TED or thyroid symptoms.
