Predicting asthma in older adults on the basis of clinical history

Respiratory Medicine Jul 25, 2018

Cavallazzi R, et al. - Via conducting a diagnostic accuracy study with a cross-sectional design, researchers investigated the predictors for a positive bronchial challenge test with methacholine in older adults being evaluated for asthma. Among 71 participants [female: 52, 73.2%); average age: 67.0 years], patients with a positive methacholine challenge test (MCT) more frequently showed wheezing or coughing due to allergens and difficulty walking several blocks. Having wheezing or coughing due to allergens remained the only significant independent predictor of a positive MCT, in older adults with suspected asthma, after adjustment.
