Pre‐ and post‐diagnosis leisure time physical activity and survival following diagnosis with ovarian cancer
International Journal of Cancer May 12, 2021
Wang T, Townsend MK, Eliassen AH, et al. - Using two large cohorts, the Nurses’ Health Study (NHS) and NHSII, researchers examined the link of pre‐ and post‐diagnosis physical activity with ovarian cancer survival. They analyzed 1,461 females with proven invasive, epithelial ovarian cancer and data on physical activity. No link was found between ovarian cancer‐specific mortality and physical activity reported 1‐8 years prior to diagnosis overall, for high‐grade serous/ poorly differentiated tumors, or non‐serous/ low‐grade serous tumors. A 49% elevated risk of death was observed among women who reduced their activity from ≥7.5 MET‐hours/week 1‐8 years prior to the diagnosis to <7.5 MET‐hours/week 1‐4 years post-diagnosis, vs those with <7.5 MET‐hours/week across periods. Overall, better prognosis was reported in relation to physical activity after, but not before, ovarian cancer diagnosis.
