Poverty and survival from COVID-19 in Mexico
Journal of Public Health Dec 26, 2020
Millán-Guerrero RO, et al. - Researchers undertook a retrospective cohort analysis to ascertain if a lower survival is experienced by COVID-19 patients living in Mexican municipalities with high levels of poverty vs those residing in municipalities with low levels. This analysis involved nearly 250,000 COVID-19 patients. The estimated mortality was 12.3% reaching 59.3% in cases with ≥ 1 comorbidities. In multivariate survival analyses, people residing in municipalities with extreme poverty were found to have a 9% higher risk of dying at any given time proportionally to patients residing in municipalities grouped as not poor. Overall, a lower survival from COVID-19 was evident in the poorest population groups. Therefore, combating extreme poverty deserves to be a central prophylactic strategy.
