Poststroke epilepsy in an ischemic stroke cohort—Incidence and diagnosis
Acta Neurologica Scandinavica Feb 03, 2020
Hassani M, et al. - In this investigation involving 240 individuals, researchers analyzed adherence to the latest updated definition of epilepsy and the incidence and diagnosis of poststroke epilepsy (PSE) in an ischemic stroke-cohort admitted to Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm during 2015 and registered in the Swedish Stroke Register. Patient records for poststroke seizures/epilepsy were scrutinized. Findings suggested that many patients with PSE had a correct diagnosis of epilepsy and were treated with antiepileptic medications. Nonetheless, this study suggests that adherence to the latest updated definition of epilepsy still has the potential for improvement. The incidence of PSE in a cohort of Swedish ischemic strokes using updated definitions of epilepsy is similar to those of previous studies. Larger studies are required to validate the results of PSE incidence.
