Postoperative residual neuromuscular blockade after reversal based on a qualitative peripheral nerve stimulator response: A randomised controlled trial

European Journal of Anaesthesiology Feb 13, 2020

Lee YJ, Oh AY, Koo BW, et al. - In this randomized controlled trial involving 80 patients aged between 18 and 69 years, researchers sought to examine and contrast the incidence of residual neuromuscular blockade when the recommended dose of neostigmine or sugammadex was administered according to a qualitative nerve stimulator response. From September 2017 to November 2017, this trial was conducted at a tertiary care hospital in South Korea. Study participants were allocated randomly to receive neostigmine or sugammadex at the end of surgery. At arrival in the recovery room, the frequency of residual neuromuscular blockade in the neostigmine group (44.4%) was significantly higher than in the sugammadex group (0%). However, in the neostigmine and sugammadex groups, the incidence of adverse events was comparable.
