Posterior capsular release is a biomechanically safe procedure to perform in total knee arthroplasty
Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy Aug 15, 2018
Athwal KK, et al. - Researchers gauged the impact of posterior capsular release on anterior–posterior (AP) laxity in total knee arthroplasty (TKA), and compared this to restraint from the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL). Only a small change in AP laxity was caused by posterior capsular release vs cutting the PCL. Hence, if performed during TKA surgery, this technique may not be considered detrimental to overall AP stability. Across the different knee states (n.s.), there was no significant difference in anterior or posterior translation when a 710 N axial load was applied.
